예스맨 (The Pushover)

The day before 6급 started, I got a text message from my Chinese friend 종언. As I have mentioned in this blog before, he’s that really close friend who is very honest with me about basically everything. Yeah after I received his text message, he surprised me to a whole new level: he asked me to do one of his college papers. And no, he’s not asking me to check his work or give him a bit of insight on how to write; he asked me to write the whole thing myself! He didn’t even care about how or what I should write in that paper; he just wanted me to do the whole thing because he didn’t want to!

Gosh, that idiot…

야 미쳤어?!?!?!?? (Are you crazy?!?!?!??) ← I literally sent that as a reply to himㅋ ㅋㅋ

And well, he started begging and whining and telling me how difficult it is for him and how busy he is these days… He knows I don’t really have any classes yet so he’s asking me. Ugh, what a baby… So you want your freakin Noona to do you stupid homework for you now??? We’re  close enough to shamelessly ask each other for this crap??? He even asked me to keep it a secret, and I just laughed. Secret my 엉덩이…

I don’t know who’s more of an idiot though, because I ended up agreeing and writing that whole paper for him. In return, I told him to treat me to a meal. To be honest I just blabbed through the whole paper and used a bunch of 고급 문법 and 어휘 (intermediate grammar and vocabulary) that I’m not even sure I used properly. ㅋㅋㅋ

A week later, he treated me and 태환 오빠 to a really awesome Chinese meal (complete with sweet and sour pork, lamb kebab, etc.) so I guess it was definitely worth writing it. And oddly that night we coincidentally met a bunch of people we knew. My old classmate 담락묘 and her American bf were there at the restaurant too, and when we were about to leave, my old classmate 채효암 just came in for her shift (she works there as her part time job and her parents are the owners of the restaurant). After eating, 종언, 태환 오빠, and I went to the karaoke, and there we saw 시가봉, also another school mate, working his shift at the karaoke place; we also saw 강낙, my seatmate in class who was also close to 종언 and 시가봉; and we saw 정은 언니 from church who came to the karaoke to relieve some stress alone. It was such a strange night. Really, if you ever just want to meet people, just go to Yeungnam University area at night and literally everyone is out there.

Then the next day in school, we learned about types of people. Apparently I’m a 예스맨 (literally “yes-man”): someone who can’t say no (or has a terrible time saying no) to people’s requests. Really, I could have said no to 종언 and let him suffer, but I didn’t. Instead, I helped him out even though the last thing I wanted to do was write a stupid paper that wasn’t even mine. Even when 유지연 선생님 asked me to work part time teaching English to her kid, I say yes, even though I literally don’t know how to handle kids well or worse, teach them anything. I couldn’t even say no when 진솔 언니 asked me to come to the overnight church outing thing. Damn, I should stop being a pushover… or is this supposed to be a good thing? Because I do benefit from it in the end every time (or maybe most of the time). I don’t know.
